Chapter 5

Maya had been in the waiting room on the third floor of Northwestern Hospital since early that afternoon. After she finally realized her ears weren’t failing her, Maya pulled herself together enough to call Jamie’s older sister in New York and told what had happened and where he was. Bebe Thompson said she’d be in Chicago as soon as she could. When she finished making a few more calls to people she felt needed to know what had happened, she had headed for the hospital and had been there ever since.

The nurses had been very good at keeping Maya updated and making sure she was comfortable. Around 8:00 p.m. the doctor who had been monitoring Jamie’s condition came out and to give Maya an update. Jamie had suffered a mild heart attack, but was resting comfortably in a nearby room. He would recover fully. The doctor’s main concern was that Jamie avoided as much stress as possible.

After being brought up to speed about Jamie’s condition and impeding recovery Maya was allowed to go sit with him. As she entered the room she couldn’t control the tears that began to slowly roll down her face. Seeing Jamie hooked up to so many machines and wires, coming from every direction it seemed, Maya asked herself for the one hundredth time “How could this have happened?”

After sitting in that uncomfortable chair in Jamie’s room for over three hours, Maya finally had something to smile about. Jamie had opened his eyes and had his famous “I have a joke to tell you” look on his face. He motioned for her to come closer and he began to tell her the knock-knock joke he had planned to tell her before, as he put it, he was so rudely interrupted by his heart attack. At that moment Maya knew he would be fine.
